OTTAWA, ON, Sept. 20, 2026 /CNW/ -- "Beginning at sundown tonight, Jewish communities in Canada and around the world will gather for Yom Kippur.

As the holiest day in Judaism, Yom Kippur – the Day of Atonement – brings to a close the Ten Days of Repentance that began with Rosh Hashanah. It is a day set apart for seeking forgiveness, making amends, and reflecting on the year that has passed.

Those observing will gather for the Kol Nidre service, fast, and devote themselves to prayer, reflection, and repentance. At its close, families and communities will come together to break their fast and look ahead to the year to come.

At the heart of Yom Kippur is the belief that renewal begins with honest reflection and responsibility. It calls on us to acknowledge where we have fallen short, to seek forgiveness, and to move forward with greater purpose.

Jewish communities gather at a time when antisemitism has surged to levels not seen in the post-war period. Jewish schools and synagogues have been targeted. Jewish Canadians have faced intimidation, harassment, and violence simply for being visibly Jewish. This is unacceptable, and confronting it is a responsibility that belongs to all of us.

Every Jewish Canadian has the right to practise their faith openly and participate fully in public life, without fear. Protecting that freedom is a fundamental responsibility of government. We have introduced new laws, we are increasing protections for communities at risk, and we are holding those who target Jewish Canadians to account. Jewish Canadians will never stand alone in confronting antisemitism.

To Jewish communities in Canada and around the world, I wish you a peaceful and meaningful Yom Kippur with loved ones.
